A recent study shows that 86 percent of companies plan to increase spending on social media in 2010. Is yours one of them? You’ve probably heard the term “social media” a lot in 2009, but may not have understood what it meant or considered it a legitimate marketing tool.
However, there are a number of reasons why 2010 is the year to start spending time and money on social media and reaping the benefits from it. Facebook recently made several business-focused changes to their site, opening up accessibility and tracking. This is allowing some brands to really embrace new flexibility to make this space their own, and provide a more personal “conversation location.”
Recently we spent some time customizing the Facebook Page for the Elmwood Village Association to promote local holiday shopping on Elmwood Avenue. They have seen the number of page interactions almost double and an almost 20 percent boost in fans. While a lot of brands experimented and tried to find their footing in social media in the past, 2010 will be the year to prove metrics beyond fans and followers and bring the look and feel of your brand to each social media platform.
Adding to the recent influx in social media usage is Google’s newly launched Real Time Search, allowing information from Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and other feeds to show up instantaneously under search terms. Google promotes this as a way to stay current with traffic, weather and more, but this is another opportunity for savvy marketers to promote their brands and interact with potential new customers.
