Hello loyal Block Clubbers,

Welcome to a whole new era. A new decade. A new age of discovery and creation, innovation and ideas. Isn’t it so exciting this time of year? First of all, you’ve got the holidays, which, depending on your persuasion, is magical or frustrating or whatever. Mostly, it’s pretty great. Then we have this week in flux, between the biggest day of the year (for many) and the first day of the next year.

It’s always an odd week. I feel like it’s not quite wintertime (as I associate winter with Santa, for many reasons I still cannot negotiate) and it’s certainly not quite spring. But it’s another season; we’ll call it Betwixt Week. I’m not sure how you feel about Betwixt Week (see, it feels normal to say now), but I feel as though I’m in a time warp. On the day after Christmas, the mere idea of Christmas feels like something from six or seven months ago; can we be nostalgic for something that happened yesterday? Hmm, I wonder. But then, it’s not quite the new year. A countdown and ball drop that’s 604,800 seconds and counting. Seven days to rest and recoup, re-generate and re-energize.

I always feel like cleaning my cupboards and cabinets out, but alas, I don’t. I think about what I was to get done in the new year, but then I go out and do something that eradicates the possibility of that happening (like joining the Cupcake-of-the-Month club, or throwing out my vacuum because it collects too much dust).

This year’s (or, I guess, last year’s) week passed with the same motivation and initiative as every previous year. I thought a lot about what I wanted to change, but did not actually change anything. I take that back. I changed the address on my license, more than half a year after the fact.

We’ll be thinking about change and similar forward-thinking goals in our upcoming Jan/Feb issue of Block Club Magazine (our 17th… our baby’s growing up!). Stay tuned for more about that. In the meantime, take a moment or many to reflect and think new. Because right now, everything old is new again. New professional goals. New rooms to vacuum. New cupcakes to ponder.

Happy New Year, and may you and yours enjoy a successful, healthy and very happy 2010!

Best,
Ben
