I don’t do sports. I don’t know sports. I don’t follow sports. If sport were a verb, I would not sport. If sports were a boat and my wading skills were not up to par (as they probably would not be), I would rather drown that get into a passing sport. That said…

There will be a work party at the St. James Playground (corner of Elmwood and St. James) this coming Sunday, Sept. 23rd beginning at 1pm and lasting approx. 3 hours. Children are welcome to join their parents at the work party. The primary task will be installing a spring ride animal that is part of an on going project of donations and renovations by neighborhood families.

Being a graphic designer, I’m constantly intrigued by printed signs that I see in my day to day life. They could be billboards, store signs, advertisements, etc. What can I say? I’m a sucker for creative media. From now on, when I see a sign that’s intriguing I’m going to photograph it and write about it. Feel free to contribute any information that you may have in regards to the image (history on the sign, the firm/person who designed it, etc.). Also, if you’ve been driving, walking, running or biking past a sign that’s piqued your interest for a long time and have been meaning to find out about it, research it or just admire it because it looks so cool, take a photo and send it in! I’ll gladly post it on Block Club for you!

Begrudgingly, I have accepted that if I want to take care of the world, I need to know how to take care of myself. Simply, the interior, home sphere needs to be whole before the exterior, outside world can be. A surprisingly simple conclusion that is more difficult than need be for me. The point is that I try to make basic changes in my life that not only causes little harm to the world, but might – gasp – improve it.

As I have been taught since a young age, charity is at its most fair and generous when the giver and the receiver know not of each other. That way neither side can deviate from the want to give and the need to receive. It’s hard to imagine this scenario in everyday life, where our homeless citizens campaign their crises in our face with varying degrees of volume and desperation. Our homeless population’s crises are everybody’s problems, and it’s time that we address it with open arms and extended hands.

Lately, I’m doing just about everything I can to avoid big box stores
and support local.
Many may argue that you save a lot of money by buying at national
chains, but doing so funnels money out of our local economy.

Mary Loftus, a Buffalo actress and extraordinaire in every other which way, is known in her circles of friends for her e-mails; e-mails which serve various needs for various people. One listserv is for rumblings on the local theater crowd, what roles they’re doing, where they’re going for post-show drinks, when they need help with props. Another is a taste of her characteristically bitter musings on national politics. But the one that makes me and so many of her accomplices happy, is her Getzville newsletter.

Maybe I’m romanticizing this whole experience, but whatever - I’m a romantic. All I know is I really enjoyed finding a place I can return to for breakfast, lunch or a snack where I don’t feel like I’m trapped in the middle of some MTV reality show, nor do I have to feel compelled to bring my laptop in order to fit in. And I bet you in a couple more trips, they’ll be greeting me with a warm “Hey Kelly!” when I walk through the door.
