A Small, Small, Small, Small World

I stopped by New World Record yesterday to see how things were going after the news broke that they would be closing shop, merely six months after moving from its beloved Elmwood and Cleveland corner to Delaware and Hertel.  The music industry, they shrugged at every chance, it’s just not keeping up. My friend Paul, with whom I worked at Media Play back in the day, told me his colleagues joke that it’s his fault.  He works at Media Play, eventually the store goes under; he works at New World, they close not once but twice in half a year.  It must be Paul, they say.  And I agree.  I told him I thought the entire depression in the music industry is related to the fact that Paul handles so many CDs a day he cannot possibly NOT be blamed for their lack of sales.

Ehh, I think he got the joke.  I hope he got the joke.  I wouldn’t want him to think he’s ACTUALLY responsible for this store’s demise.  Note to Paul: DO NOT take up employment at any area hospitals or Mighty Tacos, PLEASE!

In any case, I’ll miss New World....yet again.  It’s always been fun heading in and checking out new indie tunes I’m supposed to be listening to religiously while pretending to not know who they are in the first place, then get mad at everyone once they get big and proclaim I knew them before they sold out.  You just can’t do that at Best Buy.  It should be interesting to see what happens to their Elmwood location, as word on many a’street say that Brodo and SPoT are looking to share the space.  So long as it’s not a store that sells more cookies, I’m snug as a bug.  There are far too many cookies in my neighborhood, thank you very much.  (Now a milk store?  That idea I could champion.)

Rock on, New World Record!  I hope someday you find an even NEWER world to rock out to!

Just found your site via BuffaloPundit.  Gotta say, this is a really nice change of pace in the local online community.  It lacks the smugness and elitism of BuffaloRising and the sarcasm and anger of WNYMedia.  You guys are like the 96.1 WJYE of the local blog scene.

Thanks for your comment, Tom.  If I’m reading this correctly, you have lumped us into a group that includes Gloria Estefan, Fleetwood Mac and The Doobie Brothers.  Mind you, I’m not complaining; I’m actually honored.  That’s fine company.

Thank you for your interest in our site.  We strive to be positive in nature and community-interested.  Whether your community is your neighborhood association, your tavern that holds the barstool for you every night, or your favorite music store.  We appreciate the praise, as we are just one of many locally themed Web sites worth reading.  Thanks for choosing Block Club Online!
