Elmwood Festival of the Arts 2008

I absolutely LOVE the Elmwood Avenue Festival of the Arts. It somehow manages to capture the best of street festivals, art shows, local food and drink, and our awesome local citizens.  My favorite aspect of the Elmwood festival is that they cater to kids in a really creative and innovative way; Kidsfest is a blow-out of craft projects, amazing puppetry, interactive music and lots more.  At the end of the festival (Sunday at 4 p.m.) there is a parade of all the characters and puppets the kids made throughout the weekend.  This year’s theme for Kidsfest is “The Garden,” so expect many trees, flowers and insects!

It’s a major credit to festival organizer Joe DiPasquale that artists represent the local arts scene.  That vendors represent Elmwood Avenue and surrounding neighborhoods.  That you feel you are contributing to your community’s assets and not those from other (equally deserving but nonetheless non-local) communities.

This year the fun kicks off tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The festival is on Elmwood Avenue from West Ferry to Lafayette, and includes many side streets like Breckenridge and Auburn.  The music and dance performance stage is once again at the north end on Lafayette.  Food is right in the middle in the parking lot between Globe Market and Wilson Farms.  Stop by, walk a little, get some art, drink some drink, eat some eats, and fun some fun.

Here are some photos from last year’s festivities.  (Exclude the clouds.  I’ve already sent them a memo not to make an appearance this year.  Here’s hoping they got it.)
