Elmwood Village Named One of America’s 10 Greatest Neighborhoods!

Today the Elmwood Village was named one of “America’s 10 Greatest Neighborhoods” by the American Planning Association!  This is great news!  The announcement was made today at 10:30 a.m. at Globe Market on Elmwood Avenue by Dan Leonard of the Elmwood Village Association.

Local residents and business owners joined the press to celebrate and learn about what this designation means for the Elmwood Village.  According to Dan, this award will allow the EVA to market the area to attract new businesses and development as well as tourists from neighboring regions including the desirable Southern Ontario market.

Christine Pyne (president of the EVA) accepted the award and spoke about how the people of Buffalo are what makes this neighborhood great.  She added that the continued efforts of existing volunteers and the need for new volunteers to get involved are what will take the village to the next level and will continue to make it one of the greatest places to live in America.

The many people who live and work in the Elmwood Village may already know that it is one of the best neighborhoods in the US and that’s why they live and work here.  But for everyone else, this puts the EV on the map with Park Slope in Brooklyn, NY, Pike’s Place Market Village in Seattle, WA and Old West Austin in Austin, TX to name a few.

This is great news for the future of the Elmwood Village and should serve as a “thank you” for all the residents, business owners and volunteers who have dedicated countless hours to making it such a great place to live, work and play.

Hats off to you, Elmwood Village!  Congratulations!

As anyone with a well-educated perspective on our city can tell you, there are many ways to forecast what comes tomorrow.  There are only so many ways to pick apart the past.  It makes not a bit of difference to recount our missteps if we don’t have a firm hold on the steps we’re making today and ones to come tomorrow.  Let’s use this distinction to bring business owners of all shapes and sizes out of the woodwork and into this fantastic neighborhood.

Bring on the national names that people associate with uniqueness and style and purpose—H and M, Restoration Hardware, Apple?  I’m not at all against national retailers setting up shop here so long as they fit into their surroundings.  And let’s extend a helping hand to those local small business people who want a supportive environment in which to test out their entrepreneurial ideas.  It’s a great neighborhood to expand your horizons and perspectives.  Let’s continue to get things going.  Let’s make this announcement every day in our minds.
