Faces of Buffalo
At the Allentown Art Festival, I saw a booth at Allentown West that was all things Buffalo and pretty cool. Faces of Buffalo is a local organization that collects self-portraits of Western New Yorkers and creates large-scale mosaics of images familiar to Buffalo—significant buildings, sports teams, the actual Buffalo animal, food, for instance. According to the group, Faces of Buffalo Community Art Mosaics celebrate our greatest asset - people! up close you see creative faces; from a distance, it’s all of us!
If I hadn’t been in a hurry when I saw them at Allentown, I would have stopped and done a portrait of myself. But it was fun to see the artwork of adults done in crayon, with so much creativity and color, and of course the larger image. It’s a fun and collaborative (and not to mention easy) way for a community to be involved in a small but wide-ranging art project. Cool work, Faces of Buffalo!
If you’re interested in being part of a future mosaic piece, you can download a entry form on their Web site here. On their site, you can also check out where the participation booth has been in the past, and even contact them to have them attend your next social event. What a cool addition this would be to your company’s summer picnic, or a family member’s birthday party, or your neighborhood’s block party! Get involved and see how you can be part of art.
