I Tried to Billieve

I changed my itinerary for my cross-country drive back home in order to make it back in time for the Bills home opener against the Denver Broncos.  It was a great atmosphere in the parking lot before the game. Fans were excited and we had a clean slate in both the win and the loss column.  Then came the last second of the game, which was all the Broncos needed to kick a field goal and win.

I never thought it would have ended that way.  Even more unbelievable was the thought of it happening twice in the same season.  As I stood at the Ralph Monday night in utter disbelief during the four quarter I had a sick feeling in my stomach.  It wasn’t the combination of draft beer and chicken wings but rather the thought of us losing another one after leading most of the game.

My fears were realized when Dallas kicked a last second field goal to send 73,000 plus fans home to ponder another gut-wrenching loss.  As we were walking out of the stadium I saw a look of shock on most fans faces.  Beneath that shock however is the underlying question, when will Buffalo sports fans catch a break?

Ever since I can remember I have followed the Bills (and Sabres for that matter) with the hope and dream that our team will be hoisting the championship trophy at the end of the season.  If it were to happen it would be as if every person in the Buffalo area won the lottery.  We would be having parades down Main Street for weeks even if it were ten below and snowing sideways.

I’m not going to complain to much as we still have professional sports teams in Buffalo which is more than some can say.  However, that does not excuse the fact that we as Buffalo sports fans deserve a championship win more than anything else.  I’m sure if you asked people on the streets what the city of Buffalo deserves most a majority would say a Vince Lombardi or Stanley Cup trophy.  For mine and everyone else’s sanity I hope that time comes sooner than later.
