Just Jack

So I carved my first pumpkin last night since fourth grade, oh, about 18 years ago.  I don’t know why I haven’t done it for years now, but it’s always escaped me.  I’m usually sick this week of the year (as I am again this year), but I haven’t dug into a pumpkin in such a long time.  It was a ton of fun!

My stepdad asked me if I wanted to use the jigsaw, one of his hundreds of power tools that he uses for tasks as varied as pumpkin carving, picture hanging, weed disposal and, on occasion, turtle excavation.  This time we just gnawed away at the beautiful round orange specimen for a traditional Jack-o-Lantern approach.  I decided to go for the typical triangle-and-mouth face, keeping the carving simple.  I could have etched a tableau of Mt. Rushmore or Oprah or something, but I had just done that the week before on grains of wild rice, so I opted to keep it simple, stupid.

The image above is what I came up with.  I call him Jack.  Just Jack.

Here are some other ones I found on Flickr.  Check them out, get inspired, and remember to unplug your power tools before lighting your candle.

your Jack-o-lantern photos!  We’ll post them online for all to see!

Sounds like you had fun! Beware, when pumpkins are left outside they are sometimes eaten by squirrels. Seems to me I saw a partially nibbled on pumpkin like the one in your picture on a doorstep near here.
