Lord of the Rings: 2008 Olympics Are Here!
The 2008 Summer Olympics are fast approaching!!! This year’s olympiad is full of controversy surrounding the fact that China’s civil rights record is iffy at best. People want a free Tibet, the Chinese government wants censorship, and Apolo Ohno wants to skate really fast. (One and a half of those three things will actually happen this year. Oh well, there’s always 2010.)
Tomorrow night NBC will air the Opening Ceremonies (fitting with its 8.8.08 air date, apparently fitting given the lucky number 8 in Chinese culture) and games will conclude on Aug. 24. Word has it Celine Dion will perform at the ceremonies, so you know it’s going to be good spectacular very French include forearm clapping. Seeing as I don’t know a salt lick about sports, summer or otherwise, I’m more interested in tomorrow night’s ceremonies and the political news coverage. I’m sure riots will ensue in Tienanmen Square, either about the country’s attempted censorship over foreign press or Dion’s decision to cover Roy Orbison. Either way, those rioters will not be without warrant.
Also, in official Block Club Summer Olympic Coverage 2008 news, did anyone see the horrific opening ceremony uniforms those fools on “Project Runway” came up with last night? They were alright if you were attending afternoon tea with the Mad Hatter or a morning at the farmers’ market with Charles Manson. Not for archery semi-finals.
