Mass Appeal: Elmwood Village Fashion Show
Our friend Erin Habes, also known as Mama Dirty (thanks to her Sweet & Dirty retail fashion empire), has a big show in store for Buffalo a week from tomorrow. Mass Appeal will be the area’s biggest fashion event of the year, bringing together both Elmwood Village’s clothing stores and the artistically minded folks in this town who know how to put on a show. The event is a fundraiser for the Elmwood Village Association, raising money to help support the association’s ongoing economic and urban design initiatives. The emphasis here is on local fashions, both clothing made by local designers and clothing sold by local stores. Keeping dollars local helps to keep the economic wheels turning. Shopping at the mall isn’t evil, but it also doesn’t do much to help our local community. The Elmwood Village Association works with this goal in mind, as well as many other neighborhood initiatives like the awesome and new recycling bins lining the street, and holiday celebrations.
Erin Habes, currently holding down the Sweet & Dirty name at Krudmart (after her Potomac Ave. women’s store closed last April) and on her hilarious and fresh blog, knows thing or two about putting on a fashion show. Her last production, The Runway, a Buffalo State College student-organized and designed show held at Clifton Hall in April, was a smash hit. Thousands of people were waiting outside waiting to get in. Literally. Next Friday should be no exception.
Mass Appeal will be held in the Elmwood Village at Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church. Expect a show of theatrical proportions, including amazing music, beautiful displays and two – count ‘em, TWO – parties. A pre-show party will commence the evening in the church’s choir loft, and a post party will take place down the street at JP Bullfeathers. You can experience this awesome event a number of ways. For $30, the cost of a dinner out (pre-game at home beforehand with a PB&J if your entertainment budget is tight; or, eat in the village before), you get a seat in the pews. For $100 (I know, but wait.....wait for it....) you get VIP priority seats in the front row AND a jam-packed bag of swag from fashion retailers, AND an exclusive pre-show party with hors d’oeuvres AND wine. Oh my god gosh! $10 SRO tickets are also available. This way, anyone can go. $10 is the cost of a movie. $30 is the cost of a meal out. $100 is the cost of three meals out. Eat at home three more times next week and you can go to this. Think about it. I have. Download and print out a ticket order form and save yourself the trouble.
Friday, November 14
Doors open at 7 p.m., the show begins at 9 p.m. and post-show festivities continue at Bullfeathers.
Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church is on the corner of Lafayette and Elmwood (between Auburn and West Delavan). Tickets are available at Wegmans, at the door and online here. Get them now, while they’re hot.
