Sunday Funday

Did anyone else have an odd feeling yesterday when they woke up?  All day, it felt like it was the middle of October.  It was the first Sunday is a long string of Sundays that actually felt like Sunday.  You know how every day of the week has a feeling to it, right?  We know what Monday is like, with everyone dragging their feet back to work.  We know what Thursday feels like, getting ready to prepare for the weekend.  And we know what Saturday feels like, like we have the whole world in front of us and every minute of time open to doing something fun and carefree because, despite what our clocks say, we don’t have to be back to our normal lives for another day and a half.  Then you wake up on Sunday and it’s time to do the laundry, make food for the week, clean the bathroom and scratch your head in wonderment, thinking, “Where did my free time go?”

Maybe that’s a little dramatic, but you know what I’m talking about.

When I think of Sundays, I think of my mom doing a million things to get us ready for the week.  Spaghetti sauce simmers on the stove, the Bills game plays in the background, laundry waits to be changed and folded...the whole scene is in place.  It’s like a whole day of chaos in order to be planned.  I never watched a Bills game just because it was on.  Rather, I’d sit in front of the TV, trying to do my homework and just use it as an excuse to not get any work done.  “It’s too loud in here!  This game is too loud!” I’d scream.  “Then go upstairs and do it,” I’d get in return.  “No!  This is the family room!  I’m a member of this family!  I should be able to be in this room!” It went back and forth like that until dinner, at which point I’d hope my mom forgot that I had unfinished homework to do.  You know, the usual family time.

Yesterday’s nostalgia was due to a few things, all of which I was not expecting to arrive just yet and about which I was a little excited at the same time—cooler temperatures, quieter streets (all of those Bills fans were inside doing their thing), mass cooking sessions, and all of those last-minute cleaning missions to get ready for the week.

Maybe it’s a tease, but today’s weather seems to indicate that we’re not quite within the fall season yet.  We still have a few weeks left until autumn officially begins.  Maybe I can use those few remaining Sundays to squeeze every square inch of summer out.  Then again, maybe there’s some stew I can make.
