That’s Hot
My friend Shea is an adventurous girl. She left town a few years ago for Vermont, studying and living in a new terrain for the Williamsville native. She’s moved back to 716 (yay!) and has been seen all around town—in the city and the suburbs—doing all sorts of things here in town. One of those “things” is fire twirling. You might not know the terminology associated with this art, and neither did I until Shea made her debut throwing fire this weekend.
I got a call from a mutual friend who told me Shea had been practicing for a year now, learning the basics of movement, balance, focus and of course, safety. Apparently as with the philosophy of martial arts and the craft of breadmaking, you have to earn the right to work with the real material and to assume the title of “fire twirler” (or whatever the trainer wants to call his/her student). She met some people who were in town this time last year as part of the Infringement Festival, throwing fire and making a spectacle of their death-defying art. She told the artists she wanted to learn how to do it, so she started training. A year of training had passed, and so here she was, in her backyard with friends and a bonfire, and some spectacular fire twirling. Two of Shea’s friends showed their skills as well. It’s amazing what these people can do. Take a look...(Shea is in the purple, and the guy is named Damon.)
